Subject: Deere round baler making loose bales

Croswell, Michigan
I have a Deere 385 baler(little brother to the 435 and 535) that makes a 4x5 round bale. I have had this baler for about 10 years and it used to make bales you could bounce a baseball off of but now they seem to be getting loose. There is no tension adjustment in the manual. Could the belts be getting streached? It probably bales 500-1000 bales a year and other than repairing the lacing on a couple of belts, I have never done anything to the belts.

I can't remember, did them have spring pressure or does that have hydraulic pressure??? If it spring, your spring is stretched? and if it's hydraulic, you probaly have a sensor bent or something?

saskatchewan and Washington
If its like the 535 it should have an adjustable relief valve for the cylinders on the tension arms and a gauge to show the pressure. Also springs on the tension arms that sometimes break. Things to check. Shouldn't be stretched belts.

My 567 started doing that last year. A while later I started having a problem with the main drive chain flyng off about every 10 bales. Put on a new drive chain and I don't know if it was just a coincidence but it didn't make rags anymore.

JD parts show a compression spring along w/ hydraulic tension too like theothers said check the spring p/n e82191, see your JD dealer for instructions on how to check the psi of the hydraulic system.

If the tension is by tractor hydraulics like the 335, check the cv valves for leak back when the lever is in neutral. Or try hooking them up to the other side if dual hydraulics.

We had a 335 and now a 447 these have the springs on each for tension and I would hope you would now if one of these broke because it makes one hell of a bang. On our there is a little box on the front of the baler with hydraulic lines going in and out of and also looks like a long nut on one side. It is some king of relief valve don't know how it works but we replaced that and it solve the soft bale issue.
