Subject: Re: GPS Leveling

Saranac, Michigan
We have quite a few systems doing land shaping using RTK. We use it to map the field, and then control the elevation of the scraper in relation to a design. Since the design no longer needs to be a plane or a series of planes it allows the user to move water off a field in a more economic way. Our system uses parameters of minimum, maximum, and optimum slopes and cut/fills generally shaped in a vertical curve, breaking grade all of the time. The benefits we see are:

Less earth is moved to accomplish the surface drainage
Less fuel is used
Earth curvature is automatically corrected for, about 8" in a mile
No stopping to reset lasers
More accurate over longer distances
Works in wind and fog
Less compaction
All work is recorded for future use or checking of what is done
The operator can see all cuts and fills on the screen, so he spends less time looking for places to move dirt to.
As he grades, he sees his progress onscreen
