There is a significant amount of work currently going on in Europe, specifically Denmark regarding RTK use over a cell phone link. I'm sure it is going on over here as well....just not as publicly discussed.

As for the earlier question about whether RTK will be obsolete; not going to happen. With the new GPS receivers being capable of pulling a correction from the new satellite constellations coming live over the next 10 years, signal quality will improve. However, we are currently beginning an up-trend in the sun spot cycle so we can expect an increase in GPS issues related sun spots. In the end, how will things turn out for the end user? Good question. However, RTK isn't going anywhere.
