Near-north Ontario, French River | We grow sweet corn here in Ontario and its times like these when deciding whether or not to grow can be a very hard decision . While others may think otherwise , we value the relationship we have had with our processor so will more then likely continue to grow sweet corn this year even though grain corn 'appears' to have a better return. The reason? In the past we have done better with sweet corn as opposed to grain corn . We value that relationship with the processor, and its times like this where it may be better to take our lumps in the short term in order to gain the long term benefits. It may seem like a poor decision today for you to get into growing sweet corn( from a purely economic stand points vs grain corn) but what happens when corn prices fall? Next year things might be opposite with sweet corn showing a clear advantage so it may 'pay' you to get in now so you can benefit in future years. Not sure what the processors around you are like but the ones here in Ontario will stick with a long term grower, that perhaps has a lower average, as opposed to taking on growers with higher averages but no loyalty. Processors are looking for a consistant long term supply and they will reward those growers that maintain a relationship with them through the good and the bad years. |
