Ted, I am only aware of 2 options for speed of NEMA serial output - 1Hz and 5Hz on Starfire receivers. My only guess about the "spurts" comment is that it rhymes with "hertz". :) There are 5 message types - GGA,GSA,RMC,VTG and ZDA. I feed my Ipaq out of Starfire ITC and have seen nothing eratic in the string when I watch it come in. Also, be sure that the baud rate is the same for both the receiver and your insight.
