Like sricks said, if you have a laptop, or can buy a cheap one, just to get a hands on feeling of what it is and probably a lot more, farmergps ( www.farmergps.com ) is probably the best entry point you can have. This program is made by a farmer for farmers, so he should know where to go....
On the other hand, there are already systems for sale in the classifieds, mostly when people renew their sprayers.... Outlook, Raven, Ag Leader (Trimble's division for agriculture), MidTech.... just to name a few are quite known and have been doing good jobs till now. The next step is steering, be it whith a hydraulic system (costy) or an electric motor (Trimble EZ-Steer, Autofarm/Cultiva, JohnDeere universal autosteer ....) .
Precision is a costy thing! :(
