You can pretty much automate the process by automatically BCC'ing all outbound webmail to yourself, then setting your mail server filters to automatically dump any messages originating from your own address to the sent folder. 

Anymore we check all of our mail via webserver and only grab it into Thunderbird once a day-or-two.   I need to follow my own advice and set this up on ours.
