Subject: RE: snow to mud pictures

Driftless SW Wisconsin

Here are a few pictures from yesterday. One good thing about being in the WI hills is drainage. I have my groups split up into a corn group and a hay only group. The cows and 2008 heifers go in with the young 2009 heifers on hay only as they get close to calving.

I am going to be tied up for awhile so I dumped the remaining hay in the 4 feeders into my sacrifice area next to the corral. I'll let them eat what they want out of this but mostly make a dry area to lay down and calve when it comes time. This group should be OK for hay etc until 3/22 or 3/23 by calculations.

I snapped a picture of #3 one of my 09 heifers out of a target 1200 lb cow. Theres a bit of mud but concrete around the waterer. If I had to do it over I would spend a bit more and make the concrete pad around the waterer larger. It is cut into a slope so that gets expensive but probably would be worth it.

The hay in the bottom of the feeders dumped is not really wasted in my opinion because of the way it makes bedding and a wonderful compost pile when I use the manure fork to clean this area after they are shifted to grass about May 1.

I bet you guys are getting tired of looking at my small group of Herefords. But this is maybe a bit different system setup than many of your larger operations. I guess this is a combination of "self-service" "low cost" and "low labor" small scale birth-to-plate beef production. It has some drawbacks as with the lost calf last week but it has some positive points also.

The brockle faced one is the mate of the one that lost a calf and should be calving herself this week. The rest will start in about 3 weeks. By then there should be some scattered bare spots up the hill where they can go to calve in peace. Generally they like to calve on a bare spot higher up a slope.
