Eastern Iowa | There's some stress getting to them. Maybe it is just over crowding but look closely to re-assess your ventilation and water situation as well. Ventilation problems are easily missed, particularly if you have large pigs in a finisher with the curtains up this time of year and rely completely on mechanical ventilation. It takes a lot of CFMs to keep pigs that size comfortable.
Are inlets adjusted properly?
I have seen this problem in the past, and in my case it was weighted ray dot inlets that were malfunctioning-not responding to static pressure from the fans--creating poor air quality. Until I began to see the bites I had not noticed air issues up where my nose is, but down at the pig level it wasn't as good.
The newer barn has self actuating air inlets with a static pressure monitor instead of the lead weights. Worth every penny. Always set just right.
