The ones I saw today were ISX's, but I've seen a lot of Detroit 12.7's in the auction flyers, I think some C-15 Cats too.  All big blocks 450 or more HP.

So how does a guy know if a truck has a low enough first?  Look up the tranny specs and see what ratio first is?? Is there a certain total reduction (1st gearXaxle ratio) to look for?  Or just drive one and see how slow 1st is?  How slow (fast) should you be able to go in 1st?

What worked well for me on the last two trucks I bought, was to use a pocket gps unit to check the speed of a known good field puller at 2000 rpm in low hole.

Remember that speed and use the gps unit to check low hole speed of any new prospect at the same 2000 rpm. If the new one is within 10-15%, then you know you are good to go without bothering with all the hassel to find and compute tire size, axle ratio, low hole ratio.
Works for me :-)
