Farmington, Maine | Pretty much my son went in his own direction. I farm doing what I do and he is farming doing what he does. He got into growing using unheated hoop houses so he didn't need as much land as I do but as he adds more hoop houses he is taking up more land. He makes more money per acre with the houses than I do so I don't have a problem with it.
I built a commercial kitchen on the farm and we all use that. I pay the taxes, gas and lights and he pays a percentage of what he sells using the kitchen to compensate me. I give him a place to live at $0 cost but when he starts making more money I am sure he will either start compensating me at least for the taxes I pay for the house he lives in. He's thinking about buying his grandfathers house when that time comes which is just across the road.
In other words he went in a direction he wanted to go in and we help each other out when every we need to. It is working out very well. | |
