SW OH | So S oil ratings are for spark ignition engines. C rated oils are for combustion ignition engines. The second letter is about additive formulation. The farther through the alphabet, the better the additive package. So far the more progressive second letter oils are backward compatible with previous oil requirements.
The exception is FA rated oil, which so far has not come to fruition.
