Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn. | One of the ports on the Ag Leader Application Rate Module can be connected via a serial cable to the 9 pin connector which is present on fairly new Raven controllers. Ag Leader has this cable in two flavors. One is used with Raven controllers and the other is used with other brands.
I have used and still have the one that works with Raven controllers. I no longer use it since I have changed things around and use Ag Leader's Liquid Product control module (no longer produced) to handle my spray (or NH3) situations.
A configuration is created in the Ag Leader display. Some settings need to be set in the Raven controller such as BAUD rate, Trigger units, Trigger Interval and Data logger ON.
Then the Ag Leader display and the Raven controller can exchange information with each other. The Raven still controls the application as before but reports back information such as which booms are ON, the flow meter information etc. to the Ag Leader. This allows the Ag Leader to make various maps such as coverage and applied rate maps. Totals such as area, volume etc. are also produced. Those items are still available on the Raven as before.
The Ag Leader sends over the target rate to the Rate 1 register in the Raven. That means that the operator enters the desired applied rate into the Ag Leader display which sends it to the Raven Rate 1 register. This would be equivalent to entering in the desired rate with your fingers on the Raven in the past.
Should you want a different rate in a different part of a field, you could just enter in that rate into the Ag Leader. The Ag Leader never changes Rate 2 in the Raven so that is another choice for adjusting the applied rate. This is how I used the system. I would enter in the target rate in the Ag Leader, it would send it to the Raven which would beep indicating that it had received a new target rate. The Raven would then attempt to apply that rate. The Ag Leader display would be creating the various maps and totals as application proceeded.
It was/is possible to have these variable target rates saved on a USB stick although I never did use that feature. The general procedure is to make an Rx prescription map on some software such as SMS. This would literally be the target rates you desire in various parts of the field. This file would be saved on a USB stick and inserted into the Ag Leader display while applying. Since the Ag Leader "knows" where you are in the field, it can consult the file to determine what applied rate is desired. It then sends that rate across to the Raven. The Raven beeps four times to alert you that you have entered a new zone and that it has received a new target rate and attempts to apply that rate. This would be equivalent to you typing in a new rate for Rate 1 at that point.
This results in a sophisticated system. However, auto swath is not supported with this arrangement where replacing the Raven with an Ag Leader display and Liquid Product Control module would. This is the main reason, I no longer use the Application Rate Module this way.
I suspect not many others use it and may have entered into Ag Leader's decision to no longer support the Application Rate Module with the new GO displays. I believe a different module is now used for working with an implement switch with them.
