Subject: Building new fence over a culvert

Kingdom of Callaway - Fulton, Mo 65251
We are fencing a farm with a combination of sucker rod/top rail, and woven wire with t-posts. Location of neighbors trees, and topography decide what type of fence it gets in different runs.

There are several places with wet and dry creeks, and general low places we are fencing with all steel pipe and sucker rod to hold against water and trash that may pile against it. There are several deeper creek beds we have to cross that we usually would build a hanging water gap or similar over the top of them

My fence builder wants to try using some short culverts to drop in the creeks and low areas and then build the fence over the top of them to make the area we have to cover with a hinged water gap smaller. Neighbor across the fence is fine with anything.

How long of a culvert can I get by with? I will make sure to get them oversized in diameter, but I won't be driving over them, so can I get by with say a 10ft long culvert? They will all need to be 4ft or larger in diameter. How important is the length of culvert in the ground to keeping it anchored in place by the dirt around it and covering it?

I have used big fuel tanks for drive over crossings in the past, but they are all 24ft or longer with several feet of dirt covering them. What about using a small fuel tank and cutting the ends out? See picture below.......

Also, has anyone tried bolting together plastic dual wall pipe to make a larger culvert? Like bolting three 4ft pipes together into a triangle to increase the water capacity? My tile supplier only makes up to 4ft diameter in plastic dual wall.
