Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn. | I have not used TerraStar L personally but from what I read, I don't believe it would be a great improvement for your situation.
I assume your plan is to plant with a 12 row using auto steer but harvest with an 8 row by steering manually. Two passes of every three should be fine since you will be harvesting a group of 8 rows from the same planter pass.. The pass where the combine is taking the "left over" four rows from two adjacent passes is your concern.
When I did this, it was generally acceptable since the end gap on that pass was directly in front of me so I could visually "split the difference". Sometimes on the Headlands which were planted manually, the gap between the headland passes was erratic due to dodging power line poles on the initial pass with the planter. In those cases. I might harvest 8 rows on the first Headland pass, then take only four. I would finish the Headlands by taking 6 row passes if necessary.
My planting was being done with a higher level of correction. For several years I used Omnistar HP but have used an Ag Leader 7500 GPS with the TerraStar Pro C unlock and paid subscription recently. I have been very happy with this arrangement although there is a yearly fee involved. I move this GPS from the planting tractor to the Hagie sprayer and then to the combine to maximize my use of the paid signal.
I don't think I would be happy just using WAAS or TerraStar L for planting. Your results and tolerance level may be different.
