Subject: RE: Agleader spraying - keep coverage on trial

Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn.
I agree with the above comments. I had need for such a situation some years ago.

My situation was that I was spraying a post application for weeds in my soybeans. I was encouraged to try some Headline in a portion of one of the fields as a test to determine if there was an increase in yield. I wanted some way beside using actual physical flags to mark the area that received the Headline.

My plan was to spray the Headlands and the first part of the field with the weed killer without adding any Headline. At some point after the headlands and part of the field had been sprayed, I would stop and dump in the appropriate amount of Headline to finish the tank. After the tank was empty I would refill the sprayer with just the weed killer without Headline. This meant I would have a "block" within the field with Headline with areas on all sides without. This was the area I wanted to mark.

I used the Region approach. I named the product which would be used for the entire field as Headline Test. I carried the amount of Headline necessary for a partial tank with me in jugs. I created a Region which I named "Without Headline", I sprayed the Headlands and started spraying the main part of the field until the remaining acres left in the tank agreed with the Headline I had in the jugs.

I stopped and dumped the Headline in the top of the sprayer tank and allowed the mixture to agitate to mix the Headline with the spray remaining in the tank. I created a new region which I named "With Headline". I then sprayed out the remainder of the tank. Since the remainder of the field was going to be sprayed Without Headline, I changed the Region back to the first Region which I had used previously named "Without Headline". I sprayed the remainder of the field.

My onscreen map did NOT show the two regions. The coverage and rate maps showed where both the Without and With products had been sprayed. Auto swath worked properly for the headlands and any point row situations since the product had never changed. I was able to process the data with SMS and have SMS show the two regions as different colors. I printed out that map on paper and carried it with me in the combine at harvest time. This allowed me to visually decide which region I was harvesting.

If I were to do this again, I now have another option. That is to use two products to spray the field. One product would be without Headline and have that information coded into its name. The other product would be with Headline and have that information coded into its name. For the first part of the field I would chose the first product. When I got to the point that I was going to add in the Headline, I would change to the second product. This would cause the onscreen map to go blank because this is a new product. Auto swath for headlands and point rows would not work exactly as I would desire.

Auto swath would work as desired based on the current product. However auto swath would not shut off sections for the headlands or other areas which had already been sprayed with the first product. This was in the past before a firmware update allowed another option.

It is now possible to have the decision as to whether a section should be ON or OFF based on both the current product as usual AND a previous product. I could indicate that I wanted the auto swath decision to be based on the "without" product as well. This would mean that auto swath will work as desired. If an area has been sprayed with either the current product or the selected previous product, auto swath will keep the boom section OFF.

The two maps would be separate and the product amounts, acres, etc. will be shown completely separately.

With either approach I would make and print out paper copies. I print out my variety maps, application maps etc. and keep them in a 3 ring binder that I can carry with me for scouting and later in the combine.
