Subject: RE: JD 4630 steering line

Faunsdale, AL
The tec is referring to the steering valve under hood above engine. It takes the high pressure oil from front hydraulic pump and sends it out to the steering motor cylinder up front. There’s also feedback from steering motor to this “brick” valve under hood.

Some oil normally bleeds through this brick to supply the steering pump under the steering wheel (N on diagram) with the excess flowing through the low pressure line (I on diagram) to return to the transmission.

The steering pump uses this low pressure oil supply to send steering signals to the brick under the hood as you turn steering wheel.

Net result is if you have excess pressure/flow in the steering pump under steering wheel or the lines running in and out of it, it’s because of the high pressure brick valve under the hood. Unfortunately they’re not a serviceable item, just replace.
