| Yep, waterhemp loves sloughs. And we have plenty of those. And yes your first combine round near the slough throws those seeds out a little farther every year.
The problem is soybeans. They are the perfect host for waterhemp. And we keep using up our weed control options. Stop growing soybeans and waterhemp problems will be reduced. Easier said than done I know. But it's no different than days growing up wild oats was the toughest weed, because of all the small grains. Now you hardly see a wild oat. Back in the grandpa days before chemical canada thistle was unstoppable since it is a rhizome plant, the more you tilled the more you grew. And the 80's saw leafy spurge take over pasture and rangeland. We are just in another phase caused by our crop rotation (or lack thereof). | |
