Southern Illinois | Thanks for the insight. Yes, I feel like we should be making a profit off the cattle, especially now. I have a summary of averages over the last 4 years of our cattle enterprise. The purchased cattle are from cattle in the herd the farm doesn't own. (siblings cows that my mom and dad buy back as a college fund for the siblings with a few expenses taken out). The machine and fuel is a close approximation of the total we spend on machinery and maintenance divided between the crop and cattle/hay enterprise. We own most of the land we farm and it is paid off. We run older equipment but it still needs fixing at times. The Cattle have averaged a small profit but has been swallowed up by the row crops loss. (low yields and equipment repairs)
