ted i agree an optical sensor with the b/w disk would give the faster pulse rate, but it is still is pretty slow, like 60 rpm. this is the only shaft as it is hydraulic drive, direct to motor. maybe a small gearbox to up the speed but not sure how much to fool with it.
is your friend at psu? i am about 1.3 hours away from state college but dont recognize the name.
