Milford, IL | Not dry. Bottom seal tends to leak a little over time - either pull gearbox to replace seal (if it leaks rapidly) or farmer fix and fill box with cornhead grease.
Older style deck gearbox has 4 bolts on top cover, you can remove this cover and see if the gears have turned to powder from running without oil. Newer style has fill plugs on the side and no top cover - this style of gearbox splits in half like a dirt bike bottom end and can't easily be inspected without removal.
Either way, they need lube to run for very long.
-Edit - older style gearbox has 4 bolts on BOTTOM cover when installed. This cover will be towards the grass when the gearbox is mounted in the deck.
