South Central MN
Lot of difference location and soil types makes in the water department. Up here springs are more often than not wet. This year is actually on the dry side now, most have a lot of crop in the ground. Last year was a muddy mess after mid-May.
Higher average rainfall (somewhere around 30" if my memory serves me right) and soils with high water holding capacity can be a bad deal in a wet spring. Usually here if it does get dry then the crop can tap into the holding capacity and hang on for a month or more with little to no rain.

Now if you go a ways further north from where I am the soil starts getting more sandy, they will struggle when dry. Does get a bit lighter going further south also but that somewhat varies.

In your case you are used to seeing crops wither and dry up from lack of moisture, while I am used to seeing them drown out or get stunted by what amounts to a swamp with saturated soil. It will even start to smell like one. Only real "droughty" spots here is a sand/gravel pocket on a hill.
