I have seen racoon and skunks take it out like that also. Here it is usually only on the edge of woods. It appears like they can smell it through the ground. They only dig exactly where there is a seed. I have caught coon doing it right at dark. I have also had luck throwing corn out along the edge of fields to keep them from digging.
