IIRC there was research done years ago with Angus/Jersey cross cows bred to Charolais bulls. The cows would wean a calf bigger than they were, but they had trouble getting them to breed back.

Jerseys are pretty unique, about only dairy developed to milk on grass. Internalize their fat, large pelvic area, extremely fertile.

I took over some crosses, one of which was so starved down she needed help getting up. She bred back. Had another calve @ 13-14 mos. And her bull calf probably had 100, 150 # on her,

Guys theory —owner—was small cow/big calf. Crossed char second calf on. Figured 3/8 Jersey was about right in cow.

Tickled me—he put on kinda seminar—-college professors from Ohio took notes—-they had thousands of acres reclaimed coal land, almost yr around grazing and 3rd gen folks on welfare. Figured small, gentle—-(hopefully)—hi producing cow might work.

As for “hopefully gentle”—-we only got genetics and environment to work with——he bought and bred a set of half bloods—outa Herefords, no less—-that had been run ‘out’ and summered on Res—-snakiest bunch of sonsavitches I’ve ever worked.
