 Madison Co. Virginia | With the current prices of dairy replacements, I'm not sure that's going to be any cheaper than buying beef cows. Purchasing older dairy cattle could work, but those come with more metabolic problems, and they're more likely to over-produce for what a single calf needs. The only way I'd be somewhat confident in a dairy cow handling a single calf on cheaper forage alone, is if she's a first calf heifer; and even then, she'll need supplemental feed once the calf is over two months old. Dairy cattle just aren't as efficient at handling rough forage as a beef cow is.
Could you get someone to finance you for a herd of stockers for a winter or two, and then roll the proceeds from those into brood cows?
