| We have sold privately before and to handle shrink we have either taken a percentage off the weight for what we expect they will lose or will work it into the price. Have always tried to just work it out between us and the buyer. Most buyers are pretty flexible since the calves don't have to go sit at the sale barn and be loaded multiple times so less shrink than normal is a good possibility. Also, I didn't mention this in my original thread but a large reason we sold the calves off the cow last year was the chance to sell the corn at $4-5 instead of feeding it. It worked really well last year so we did it again this year, first set of bull calves averaged 555# at a $1.05. 3/4 angus X 1/4 simmental, born in march, been on pasture all summer without creep. I was a little nervous we wouldn't see that 1 in front of the price but I think it worked well again this year. | |
