Subject: RE: Silo repair

West Central Wisconsin

We've repaired three silos on our farm because daylight could be seen from the inside. One was a conventional poured silo and the other two were stave of which one was a sealed high moisture bottom unload and the other conventional. The poured silo we had replastered with mortar and trowel and a bunch of scaffolding. the wall texture was similar to what you have. I'd have to look tomorrow but I seem to recall some plaster flaking off at the upper end where the mortar tapered off quite thin. BTW, this is a 20x60 and we plastered up to about 45'. This would have been in the early 90's and I don't remember the cost.

The other conventional was a 12x45 stave that we had epoxied. The two guys hired somehow used rollers to apply. They must have had a hose on the end of the rollers handle because everything was done from inside ground level. I thought this method lasted the best of the three. I would suspect this could be done with a sprayer nowadays.

The 20x60 high moisture sealed unit was resealed with Gunnite, sp?. That process is similar to spraying on a mortar mixture. It did not last very long and was the most expensive but also biggest project.

As far as being a worthwhile project that's your call. We have five silos and they all sit empty after the dairy cows were sold in 2018. Did the silo have an unloader at one time or was it never finished? I don't see any overhead wires or fuse box from this angle. Assuming there is power to the silo I'd be willing to bet a 20' unloader has to be at least $10,000 + based on the last one we bought in the early 2000's. Good luck!
