| So checked on cows yesterday and bred heifer had calved within the hour and calf was trying to stand. Mother heifer was around but not interested in calf (I had a couple of other cow/calf pairs in with this pair) and 2 other cows were handling the cleanup of the calf. I got the pair separated from everyone else and she wants nothing to do with this calf. I put her in the headgate and have had the calf milk her dry 3 times since yesterday about 3pm. I draped the placenta over the calf when I let her out of the headgate and she still wants nothing to do with him. I'm not completely opposed to a bottle calf but from a bred heifer that's nice otherwise, this stings alittle. Plus we are heading into planting season in the next day or 2 and available hours become a premium. I do have kids of age that can tend to a bottle calf but rather he goes with mom. Any help or suggestions to get them to work with each other? | |
