We have both. A rotary rake will rake about anything. Including rocks, brush, and wet hay. If you rake alfalfa to bale as dry hay it will beat the leaves off. Nothing is better for dry alfalfa than a wheel rake.

I don't agree, a lot more ash (dirt) in my hay samples where I've used a wheel rake. And I toss the bush off my fields before raking. If you're raking rocks up, I'd be adjusting the rake to where it isn't operating as a landscape rake, too. As far as beating the leaves off, IDK you can run a rotary pretty slow, where it's lifting/carrying the crop verses rolling and rolling and rolling the crop.
I think there's a place for all three types of rakes. But I've parted with the wheel rake (still have a roil bar), because it was getting used the least. If money wasn't an object and I had inside storage, it would've still been here. |
