Subject: Are they diversified family farms?

WCIL
We keep wondering what kind of hog farms are closing down? Are they diversified family farms? or are they farms that rely on hogs for the income? Are they older farmers that are just tired of raising hogs for peanuts/manure? There are 2 independent Farrow to Finish operations in our area. One has 200 sows/us and the other has 700 sows. Both operations own about 1000 acres of farm ground, grow their own corn and provide a portion of the labor. Neither is going to go under due to equity and lower losses than the industry average.

What kind of corporation is telling farmers to work for interest only? Are they one of the top 20 Pork Powerhouses? Are they big corporations or are they family farmers that bit off more than they can chew? We sure hope that none of our neighbors that are contract finishers get caught by the biggie in our area that is filling all of the buildings in our area. So far there are no rumors of any problems at all.
