Subject: RE: Redball/ wilger flow meters side dress applicator

Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn.
We use a ground driven pump for starter fertilizer on our 24-30" planter. The output from the pump goes through a flow meter and then splits with a line going to each wing of the planter. Each branch feeds the center of a tee between 2 sets of 6 Wilger columns. These are the Lo Flow columns since we desire a starter rate of 5-6 GPA. The entire planter is considered a single section. Application for the entire planter starts/stops depending on whether the planter is raised or lowered.

I also spray with this planter. I have a control system where the output after its flow meter splits with a line leading to each wing of the planter. This line splits again toward the center of each wing. Each split leads to an electric ON/OFF ball valve. The output of each ball valve leads to a set of 6 Wilger flow columns. These columns are the standard rate style. Standard rate flow columns are used since the application rate is 10 GPA. Since four ball valves are involved each group of 6 rows can be turned ON/OFF individually.

The sets of Wilger columns are mounted on a steel plate on a short stand which is painted white. The white background makes a nice contrast and makes it easier to see the balls. For our rate/speed, we use the red plastic balls in each column. In normal operation they ride about 3/4 to 7/8 of the height of each ball. This makes them easy to see and compare with each other.

We have had very little problem with either the starter or spray but it is reassuring to be able to glance at them for confirmation.
