East of Broken Bow | If you are cheap but fairly young and strong, a good heavy duty slide hammer for tires works well. Can use it for other tires as well. Works on almost any tire, is fast but a lot of work.
Next would be one of the bead breakers like mentioned above that clamps on the rim, and you use a wrench to move a foot that breaks the bead. I got one of these when I got older and fatter, and my shop budget went up a bit. Works very, very well in combination with a slide hammer. Use a slide hammer to move the bead a bit to get the foot behind the bead better, crank the nut on the bead breaker, then break the bead loose the rest of the way around with only 4-5 hits with the slide hammer. Doesn't take much work, and very fast.
The hydraulic breakers are very fast, but they also are heavy and require a power source. If that doesn't matter to you, it is by far the safest, fastest way to break a large tire bead, although the breaker that clamps to the rim is probably just as safe. | |
