Not a good place to cut corners.
By the time it got hot in the top the damage has been done. If you live where it snows watching the snow melt off the roof wd be just as effective. Or non-effictive.
Less than $2000 wd buy you a temp/moisture cable and monitor.
Bin thermometer?
