NW Washington
I think Harry's popularity was about the same as G.W. Bush's when he left office.
But he was a good fellow who tried his best. He was a little to honest to be very popular. His firing MacArthur did not earn him much favor but as he said he had to let him know who was the boss.
There are a couple of books about Truman's life that are worth reading. And no, I don't think he would be a Republican as he was a true man of the people. BTW, Harry tried to enact health care reform too only to have it defeated by the GOP aided by the American Medical Association, the big medical doctor organization. He integrated the Armed Forces too, which caused more than a little strife in some quarters.
Oh, there was the matter of the Korean War which did not make him very popular either. Eisenhower campaigned on getting us out of Korea and did manage to get the shooting stopped but now over 50 years later our troops are still in Korea.
Harry quickly recognized Israel in 1948 and that can of worms is still plaguing world peace too.
