Eastern Kansas | Did it 3 or 4 years ago and it worked well. Oklahoma State has some real good info on what plastic to buy, and how many bales you can fit under 1 role of plastic. I think it's 84ish bales. The bales need to be under the plastic before they get rained on or I believe it can mess cows up, because the NH3 will attach to the wet places on the bale. So make sure you have a window to combine, bale, haul, and tarp before it rains. Believe I read it's actually better to bale the straw with dew on so that there's a little more uniform moisture in the bale for the NH3 to attach to. Seal your plastic at the ground with dirt or rock. Where ever you place your stack of bales, the NH3 will sterilize the ground underneath the stack for like 4 or 5 years so keep that in mind.
I am planning on doing it again this year if we have a weather window. | |
