Eastern NE KS | Most prairie burns are started with a drip torch. It dispenses burning drips of diesel/gas mix at about 1 drip to 1-3 feet. Before drip torches, fires were started with burlap soaked in diesel. This was bundled with wire to make the burlap last as long as possible. A long wire lead was used to drag this along the grass on horseback or on foot.
I believe the spray is water snuffing out the fire on the down wind side. The backfire is moving toward that rig and it is left to creat a fire break (black ground with no remaining grass fuel.)
