That the landlord has been receiving better offers for years and out of respect for your father has allowed him to continue this long. There are some really great landlords out there that do have compassion for their long term tenants. 40 years is a great tribute to your dad.

The landlord may not have felt the same way about you. Everyone that liked my dad does not like me. I don't know why but that is the case. The fact is you cannot inherit an existing lease or your father cannot bestow it on you. Your father may well have influence with the landlord but in the end it is the landowners decision.
