That is assuming that you are investing in something along the lines of mutual funds. You can most certainly do the same thing as funds and manage it yourself.

If you are talking about investing in stocks and depending on someone else managing the company you invested in, that is true - but the way I see it, watching the performance of a company and making a decision to keep your money invested in it or pull out and invest elsewhere is no different than watching grain prices and deciding what crops to plant. The same can be applied to funds as well. This is why one of the golden rules of investing is not to put all your eggs in one basket. It wouldn't be wise to plant your entire farm to only one crop and only use one hybrid either.

It's all about managing risk - in both scenarios.
