Assuming it is a JD 8300, it would be a 1997, 496 cu in engine @ 200 PTO hp.

It's my understanding that the 81's, 82's, and 83's used the smaller 466 on earlier models and the 496 on the newer ones.  84's all had the big motor.  I think some on here have said that you can tell the newer ones by the different hood decals, the older ones have black stripes and lettering, and the newer ones have the yellow letters.

It is probably a 95 0r 96 and it has the 466 motor in it. They jumped the serial numbers to 20000 when they put the bigger motor in mid year 97. It will have the black sripes in the hood decal, also an indication of the smaller motor.

We have a 95 model with the smaller engine and it has a lot of power. Had an 8400 also at the same time and the 8300 would out do it. Got rid of the 8400 for a 8410T, but I would not be afraid of the small engine. The 95 and 96 model years 8100, 8200, and 8300 had the smaller engine and they changed and put the larger one in all models starting in 97. The 8400's all had the larger engine.

In 97 they all went to the 496 cu ( 8.1 ) and the serial number started with 10000. In 98 they updated the transmission and all serial number started with 20000.

I would not be afraid of a 466 cu ( 7.6 ) engine at all. This is a very good engine. The updated trans will shift smoother.

Look on the side of the engine. The number will be stamped in the side of it. if its the smaller one it will say 6076, meaning its a 7.6 Liter, actually its just the metric version of the old 466. Very good engine though, in fact may be better than the bigger one. If it says 6081, it means it is a n 8.1 Liter. The reason i say these are not the best engines is because was in its time were it was trying to make a bigger engine and basically just added on to the 7.6 and turned it up. Its a good motor until you put a power chip on it, then you have a great possibility of blowing it up.

sw corner ia.
a 466 is a 404 with larger pistons. Does that mean the 404 is a better motor than the 466?

Will it blow up too? I want to see pictures of the splosion.

yupp, actually it will. Had a 4630 in deere school that we we put an 8.1 L turbo on, turned the screw, and put a big intercooler on. We all liked to see it blow black smoke! and Yes it is no more!

It IS a 1997 model. It has the 8.1 liter engine. It was sold new in April 1997 (built in Dec. 1996) to a farmer in Jonesboro AR. Jeff Dewitt Auctions then had it for a while and it was sold to a farmer in MO (at least according to Deere's records). It had 8 warranty claims filed against it in it's life, but they are too old for me to tell you what they did.
