Those $595 cars would be worth $6,300 in today's money. Certainly not going to find a 3 or 4 year old car for that, but finding a good car for under 6 grand isn't that hard to do.

I accompanied my sister when she bought a $4500 2007 2wd cr-v this past summer. Spotlessly clean undercarriage, and 160k miles. The only downside is a torn passenger side seat where the previous owner's dog wore it out. I've been looking for a replacement seat, but those cars simply aren't in the junkyards at all. I expect that car will do her very well for the next 10-15 years. The car came from the Richmond area, and I think had spent a lot of its life in North Carolina.
The seller had it listed for $5k, which seemed to us to be a good price. Just before my sister handed over the cash, the seller said the price is actually $4.5k. We hadn't even intended to haggle, even though he had built in haggling money in the list price. |
