this could be where they succeed, not replacing diesel trucks like diesel locomotives replaced steam locomotives, but reinventing freight. It won't be two axles pulling 80,000# at 65MPH, it will be a convoy of independent autonomous 30,000# units going 45, six inches from the one in front and back, traveling all night, leaving and coming in on schedule. Steam didn't get replaced because it couldn't be as efficient as diesel, it got replaced because it had become locked into a model built for a different time, and it took a new power source to modernize that model. Trucking and trucks are built around the driver, make them autonomous, and they won't look the same, won't have to compete. |
