Subject: RE: Just how bad were gas tractors?

Southeast Virginia
My dad got his first diesel tractor in 1971. It was a Farmall 544 Hydro and he got a 656 gear drive as well. I still use the 544. He retired in 1972 and sold everything but the 544, a disk and a Bush Hog. When I came back to farm in 1983, I had to almost start from scratch on equipment.
He had 2 cylinder Deeres, Oliver and International gas up until then. I was too young to drive any of the gas tractors in the field but I do remember he had me engage the belt hooked to a 70 Deere that we ran the hog feed grinder with. I also remember driving the MT around the farm for fun.
