1. A bare metal rod should not be used in any barrel. Get a good carbon fiber rod or at minimum a rubber coated stainless steel one.

2. There are only a few times to clean a rifle barrel, when you take it out of the box, when accuracy diminishes and when a carbon ring develops. The last two are kind of caliber specific.

Bad things are way more likely to happen from cleaning a barrel vs not cleaning it.
