sw Nebraska
I roped calves for 27 years. I think poly's are the most popular now, 27-30 foot long. I preferred them soft but not limp. I started with grass ropes then a polygrass blend. The grass ropes had to be at the proper moisture but had a feel like now other. I kept them in an airtight rope can. Poly's have some undesirable springyness that is hard to explain that can give them a funny action that the grass ropes don't. Poly doesn't stretch so used by steer trippers and calf ropers although now most calf ropers hold slack and take part of the jerk to keep the calves on their feet and the trippers of course want to throw the steer. Tie strings for steer tripping /single steer roping and calf roping are nylon that are roughed up a bit to help them hold. Team ropers use nylons, heel ropes are stiff, head ropes softer. Nylons stretch, headers don't want to jerk a steer off their feet.
