Wood burning fireplaces can be dirty. Typically something falls off of the firewood as you're bringing it in the house. The bottom of the fireplace is a pile of ash (heavy gray dust) that will have to be removed eventually. They can let soot into the house. A proper fireplace that drafts correctly will help. Improperly drafting fireplaces give the rest of the fireplaces a bad name. They do add a little heat to the area right infront of the fire. They are definitely not a "sealed" opening for the house.

Best thing to do with a fireplace if you actually want to use it is get a flue pipe installed and buy an insert, woodstove, etc. Be able to control how much air is getting to the fire is quite advantageous. Some models come with a blower that will pump more heat into the house.

Best get an insert with glass doors if you want the best of both worlds.
