You should have a damper built into the upper part of firebox, open only when burning wood, yes it’s dirty in bringing in the wood, a fireplace should draw a good upward draft, if it does, your ash and dust should go up, not into the house

As far as heating efficiency, I closed mine off and put in a Fisher stove after about 2 years of a fireplace, been using this one about 45 years
