NW Washington | Just cook the asparagus by itself. It only takes a little while to cook and overcooking it makes it mushy. I break off the tough lower ends of the asparagus, it will snap at about the right spot if you bend the stalk. Then put it in a skillet with about a quarter cup of water and some butter or olive oil, cover the skillet and bring it to a boil, and steam until the stalks are tender. Test the stalks with the tip of a paring knife. When it is tender remove the pan from the heat. This only takes a few minutes so pay attention. The link shows other methods of cooking asparagus.
