I don't think I've ever assumed or even said that my retail rate is cheaper than their wholesale rate.

"Arizona is very solar friendly so we have net metering, which our provider seems to be OK with. I think they make a considerable profit in so doing, which is OK with me."

How would they make "considerable profit" off of the power you are selling back to them if your retail rate is not lower than their wholesale rate which they can buy power at (at the time that you are selling your excess back to them) ?

Net metering only exists because some states force it.

Doing some reading, Arizona ended their "net metering" mandate in 2016.    Do you still have net metering or are you on net billing?      Net billing can work to the utilities benefit.  Net metering does not.

Net billing is not nearly as beneficial to the residential customer having a solar panel greater than what they actually need for their own peak load.
