NW Washington | Maybe the syrup was sorghum syrup. I remember having sorghum syrup once in a while when I was a young lad many years ago that was made locally in Indiana. Now it is hard to find and expensive. I also remember a hot homemade syrup that my mother cooked what she called "dessert dumplings" in. I am guessing that syrup was based on caramelized white or brown sugar.
