My great grandfather broke his hip and ended his farming career in the 50s. His neighbor had broken their hip and never got it set and walked by swinging the whole body to move on leg. Also ended the farm.
Maybe it's that these people are 20 to 30 years older than the life expectancy in 1940. 60 years was an old old man in 1940.
